Poem 4/13/11

How to Pull Together a Life

From the cobbled scribbles
of early childhood
to the written words
left carefully as reminders,

from the photographs in frames
to the weedy ones in boxes
and undisciplined hard-drives,

pull together your life
from the sources you love,
the pity of others discarded,
their unheeded advice, too,

but keep on laughing,
even as the fear of losing
grips you, for laughter
is the truest signpost home

and that is how a life,
your life, pulls together,
generosity entangled in envy,
happiness brushed through
with anger and joy,

each element for everyone,
pulled together uniquely,
your song individually universal.
Your life, pulled together.
