what is, is

We had a Mother's Day/ early seventh birthday adventure yesterday, in lieu of a big party. We had a little party with his best friend Friday, and it seemed like this year was more about having fun together, as a family, and that's what Remy decided, too.

So we went adventuring to a water park in southern Jersey.

And it was a lot of fun! We all share a love of water slides, it turns out, and we knew we loved floating down a river on inner tubes. Even a fake river. (Though I do miss the real river. As soon as it gets hot enough, I'm hoping we'll find a river to tube down near us.)

All in all, the day was a huge success with the one minor caveat that I had been sure there was a hot tub somewhere and there wasn't and now I think it might be at the other water park we researched, darn it. I do love me a hot tub!

And then. Then we got home, did the normal bedtime routine and all was fine. Until Rem woke up explosively sick. Twice. If last year was the year of strep and ear infections, this year has definitely been the year of GI viruses.

And that's just part of life, as it is. Sure, it isn't at all pleasant to be woken up in the middle of the night and have to help clean up (my husband does more than his share), but this is what I signed up for. This is parenthood. Exciting adventures, daily routine and fun projectile fluids and all.

Still, since I'm only human, I had pleasant middle-of-the-night fantasies about re-flooring the second floor, where all our bedrooms are, in either hard wood, bamboo or marmoleum. It's great being in the moment, but carpet is annoyingly yucky. I do not understand the appeal.

We cleaned up, we went back to sleep. Remy is still sleeping. Hopefully, he'll wake up feeling lots better.

How was your Mother's Day?
