poeming on a belly dance theme

the sway of hips
the bouncing chest pops
the snaking arms

i have been in love with belly dance
since i was a child, seven or eight
and took my first workshop

i have been in love with belly dance
since before i learned to control
my undulations and circles

the stomping feet
the clicking fingers
the mesmerizing eyes

i have been in love with belly dance
since i first heard the music,
the mizmar and the drum

i have been in love with belly dance
since i learned that my body is my own
and my dancing is a prayer

the call of the one
embedded into the floating
melodies and grounding beats

yes, i have loved and am loving
my dance, straight from the center
of my being, anchored in my belly
