darning socks

first, gather the worn out, holey socks.
there will be many, too many,
stretched thin where your feet defied
the gravity of the ground.
next, gather your supplies: woolen yarn,
needle and something to hold the heel
steady, a small jam jar will do in a pinch.
thread yarn through the eye and carefully
begin stitching, straight lines directly
over and through the hole.
and weave those lines together, over
and under, over and under, again
and again, until fabric joins together
seamlessly.
                   finally, weave in those ends,
the last bits of loose thread, and when
you can do without them
                                          ruthlessly snip.
